Capacity Building Field Guide

Measuring capacity building results

How to measure capacity building: participation, finished deliverables and outcomes over time — not just satisfaction scores.

Three layers of evidence

  • Participation — who engaged, in what, and how consistently.
  • Finished work — plans, campaigns, policies and systems completed and in use.
  • Outcomes — results the nonprofit chooses to report, such as funds raised, board engagement or retention.

Why satisfaction scores aren’t enough

A good workshop rating says little about whether anything changed. Track whether the work got finished and whether skills are still used months later. In Grow Digital Fundraising, 84% of participants still use their new skills weekly and 79% raised more than the prior 12 months.
